Mixing Faux Florals For Gorgeous Outdoor Decor

I used faux florals to make these fun outdoor fall window boxes.

It’s hard not to embrace the Fall when you walk into JOANN, not gonna lie. The florals and fall decor will inspire even the most resistant decorator as evidenced by the array of fall flowers I now have adorning my shed workshop!

I made these simple window boxes for the shed a few years ago and always struggle to find the right florals for them because it’s under cover (i.e. doesn’t get rained on), and gets direct sun… so everything bakes and dies. UNTIL NOW! I picked up some $2 potted mums but they looked decidedly plain, so I decided to embellish and fill them in with an array of FAUX florals. #genius

To amp up the window boxes, I picked two full faux hydrangea blooms and then I clipped them apart to have individual stems. I stuck these right into the dirt of the potted plants to give the window boxes some colorful height. I used some drapy florals in front of the mums to overhang the planter a little bit.

For added embellishments, I used these wired floral stakes to pierce smaller metallic foam pumpkins and wrap around these pumpkin spice pine cones so that both of these could be tucked amongst the flowers.

Finally, I clipped some live hydrangeas from our overflowing hydrangea tree and tucked these into the window boxes as well! My hope is that they will dry out and look very much the same in a few weeks.

But there’s a lot more than window boxes going on here… I picked up a carvable pumpkin to make another flower arrangement. This is something I do every year with a real pumpkin, but it lasts for maybe a week, so I’m thrilled about this faux arrangement that will last forever!

DIY Faux Floral Pumpkin Arrangement

Use a small serrated knife (I literally used my pumpkin carving knife) to cut off the top of the carvable pumpkin exactly like you would with a real pumpkin.  I had some green floral foam on hand to help me arrange the flowers, but honestly I didn’t need it. I started with the front of the planters because I knew I wanted those two stems to be hanging over the front of the planter. I needed to bend and fold the stem of these to make them fit. One reason I love faux florals is because they are much easier to manipulate in my opinion because of the wire stems!

I continued to add flowers keeping in mind balance and height. I knew this was going to be perched in front of my shed, so I used my taller flowers at the back. Make sure you step back and look at the planter from a distance to get a better sense of any holes in the arrangement or places that need to be better balanced. To tie this planter into the window boxes, I tucked in a few of those foam pumpkins and pinecones. Flowers used: Autumn Bay Leaves, Burgundy Sunflowers, Dried Barley, Amaranthus Spray, Green Millet, Berry Spray.

I had a bunch of larger mums and cabbages without a home so I brought those over to my shed. Some are just in their boring plastic pots, but I grabbed a cute basket to cover the pot of this one and grabbed a couple others from my stash… super cute!

The last item I used in front of my shed, was this adorable metal floral container perched amongst a few more pots of mums and cabbages. I had a bunch of extra florals that I simply popped in there and the whole scene makes me so excited for fall! Florals: Cotton Bush, Autumn Bay Leaves, hydrangea, and green millet.

Bottom line, when faux florals are mixed in with real florals they always looks better, in my opinion! I won’t keep them there all season, but for a month or so this is the perfect way to create lasting exterior decorations for fall! I’m now thinking I should add a wreath or a cute doormat to the scene! Stay tuned… head over to JOANN to pick up ALL of these cute florals and fall accents… guarantee you will come away with something amazing for autumn! (Did you know JOANN has a How-To app?
