One Room Challenge REVEAL: Repurposed Eclectic Dining Room

Psssst… this post *might* contain affiliate links: see my disclosure here.

There’s no way to do this briefly so grab a cup of coffee… this is going to be a whopper. First of all, thanks to Linda from Calling it Home for the motivation and thanks to ALL OF YOU for being such wonderful cheerleaders throughout the last 6 weeks. SUCH fun!  Just to remind you where this all started… May I submit Exhibit A. We moved into this house last April, and the formal dining room had become a dumping ground for everything from craft projects to dog food to extra furniture. Not good.

I’m THRILLED to say, that as of today we have a shiny new eclectically terrific dining room to enjoy. (Full source list at the verrrry bottom for you!)

In a nutshell, we painted the walls and trim (and by we, I mean the painters), added curtains, reupholstered everything, brought in a new pendant light, and painted the sideboard and the dining room table. And the best part of any room reveal is all the fun extras and accessories like artwork and table décor that came into the space!

For the tablescape, I wanted to bring in a hodgepodge of dishes and glassware! Mission accomplished.

The chargers were picked up at Michaels for some ridiculous discount. The white dinner plates are from Marshalls and the fish plates are my latest loves from Goodwill. I had all the glassware and have been slowly collecting the various glass candlesticks in the middle. Oh! The silverware? Etsy. For. The. Win. I’ll share a tutorial later for the napkin rings. Super duper simple.

Let’s talk fabric for a sec. I want to mix ALL the prints. Thanks to Lacefield Designs for the curtain and the dining chair fabric. I’ve been COVETING the curtain fabric for YEARS. Yep. Years. (Curtain tutorial here.)

And the sidechair fabric is courtesy of Minted… did you know they have fabric? I’m loving it. That combined with the greatest paint ever known to man (MaxxGloss by DecoArt) have made me a VERY happy camper along that wall. (Upholstery tutorial here.)

I DIYed the macramé artwork and will share a link to that tutorial soon. I already mentioned the mirror makeover in this post.

With a theme of blue and white… I HAD to have fun with accessories! The best part of any room makeover in my opinion! That cotton indigo fabric was from the flea market and I’ve been eyeing it for two summers! The New York print is imitation vintage but you could’ve fooled me!

The bar cart is new! It wasn’t in great shape when it came home from the flea market and a shiny coat of bright blue paint is WAY better. Here’s how she looked when I bought her:

My pencil drawings are EVERYTHING. The incomparable Jessica Jorgensen drew them for me and they are the bestest things ever. Go to her etsy shop and ogle.

I brought in a new sisal rug from RugsUSA to fill the space a little better. The patterned oriental rug was a consignment store find before we moved (they’d written the price with a sharpie right on the rug… what?!) I actually pulled the color pallet for the room from the rug, but it was the tiniest bit too small. So… the sisal underneath does the trick!

Did you see the chandelier? That’s pretty much the reason I started with this whole makeover… the price with Build.com has gone up quite a bit since I bought it unfortunately, but it’s the loveliest blue glass. I loved that it was a little modern and a little traditional.

I love bringing together patterns and textures and colors and…well… that’s what you’re looking at! From that one oriental rug, I was able to narrow down a color pallet and then I just let the wheels start to spin!

  9. Charlotte, this is incredible! I always love seeing how you pull rooms together, because your designs are so artful. The colors are beautiful together, and there is such a warmth you’ve brought to this room! I bet you and your family are going to love sharing meals in this space!

  10. I’m in love with all the colors in you Dining room! Yes, those tie-dye fabrics are awesome, made those vintage chairs less ‘serious’! What a great space for your young family, but I must say I am blown away with the malachite blue art! Did you make that? you should sell those! Just perfect! Congrats and Cheers! Now unto the next room!

    1. THANK YOU! Isn’t that art amazing?! I found that at HOMEGOODS a few months ago and KNEW it had to come home for this room! I WISH I could make something like that!!

  11. I’m in love with the macrame hangings. And a fun fact – Build.com is a start up company right here in my home town of Chico, CA. Created by CSUChico graduates, it is one of our town’s most important employers – next to Sierra Nevada Brewery.

    1. Thanks, Cyndi! I’m a real macrame-aholic these days!!! Is that right about BUild.com? Amazing! I worked with them for a restaurant redesign and they were SO patient with some of the issues that came up when dealing with someone else’s space!

  12. Fantastic Charlotte! I love the color palette you went with and I LOVE that rug against everything else. The pop of yellow is genius! Great job!

  13. Charlotte! YES to the blue and whites….aaand we have matching Home Goods canvas art in our reveals today. I like yo’ style, girl! 😉
    xxxx

  14. Charlotte, the rug may have been your inspiration but there is nothing stuffy or serious about this room. It is so much fun!! And there is eye candy all over the place. I absolutely love the pops of color especially with the coral colored buffet.

  15. Charlotte – this is beautiful!! I’m dying over that chandelier (love, love, love it) and the drapery and chair fabric are fabulous! You macrame wall hangers are totally amazing too! Congrats! We really do have to do our own little blogger in-person house tour!

  16. … so I’m attempting my comment again because I think my first one disappeared (if not, oops 🙂 ) I absolutely adore your curtains, and I love the layering of the rugs (even if that wasn’t your first thought, it worked out beautifully). Great job!

  17. Amazing, Charlotte!! What an incredible difference! I am swooning over the colour scheme you chose. That New York print! We have the same one in my boys’ bathroom (that I redid during the previous orc). Love it all – congrats!!

    1. Thanks, Krista!! Is that right?!?! SO funny! Where did you get yours? Mine was just a flea market snag, but he was very upfront about saying it was non-vintage. Could have fooled me! 🙂

  18. This is such a vibrant space! I love you made all of the traditional pieces funky and colorful! So many interesting things to look at, I can’t stop smiling. It’s beautiful.

  19. I like the old floor and the big fireplace in your dining room. I really like old houses, especially 19th century. (I live in a Queen Anne Victorian built in 1889.) The blue and white art is gorgeous and the NYC print really does look vintage to me, too! Those beautiful pencil drawings look so nice over the fireplace. I like the marble inset in your sideboard. I like your idea of layering your oriental rug over a larger rug. The chandelier is really pretty. So is the new fabric on your chairs. You have a nice mix of modern and traditional. Your tablescape is really beautiful. I love blue and white, especially in a dining room, and adding some accent colors livens up the color scheme!

    1. Thanks for all your sweet compliments, Lucille! This house is about 1850 so it has some history to it! I tried to keep it fun but also embrace the details of the space! xx Charlotte
