Sunday Seven with the DIY Playbook

Psssst… this post *might* contain affiliate links: see my disclosure here.

This last summer, I had the pleasure of finally meeting the two talents behind the DIY Playbook… lucky me! Bridget and Casey are like unicorns in the blogging world… talented designers, friends, business partners, managing to juggle day jobs… In other words, WHO ARE THEY?! Casey is a TV producer (call, me!) and Bridget is a superhero otherwise known as a high school teacher. They’ve been friends for ages, live in Chicago and are basically cooler than I will ever be. Their collective style is right up my alley: chic with fun touches of texture and pattern and lots of great accessories. I’d love to hear them describe their design similarities and design differences! When I was obsessing over the blog, I noticed more similarities than differences, but I’ve had a lot of caffeine so can’t be held truly responsible for my opinion right now. Without further hyped up yammering, read on to get to know Bridget and Casey from the DIY Playbook!

Question 1: Why did you start blogging?

We’ve been best friends since high school, and would often spend our weekends scrapbooking and puffy painting t-shirts for school pep rallies. Yep, we were big nerds! But that creativity always kept us close and our friendship strong! Those crafty projects continued into college and beyond until we found ourselves decorating our first apartments. In order to save some money, we DIY’ed all of the pieces in our homes and had such a fun time doing it. We eventually decided to put some of those projects online to inspire others to tackle them, and the DIY Playbook was officially created in 2013.

Question 2: What has been your proudest moment as a blogger?

We are currently working on a master bedroom makeover for a deserving family in our hometown of Chicago. We’ve partnered with Lowe’s for the big project, and it’s been so great to put our talents to use to do some good. It’s always nice to make our own homes pretty & comfortable, but to be able to do that for someone who truly deserves it is incredibly rewarding.

Question 3: What is the hardest thing about blogging?

Without a doubt the amount of time that goes into it. It can sometimes be a bit overwhelming and we often find ourselves with long to-do lists. We both work full-time jobs (Casey is a TV producer, Bridget is a high school teacher), and we feel like there just aren’t enough hours in the day to do it all. We love blogging and find so much joy connecting with our readers, so it’s worth every minute. We wouldn’t change it for anything!

Question 4: What is one thing you wish you’d known early on with your blog?

We wish we would have known that you’re not going to please everyone. It can sometimes be a bit scary putting your home (& yourself!) out there for other people to judge and critique. But at the end of the day it’s your home and you’re the one who lives there, so it should make you happy! We’ve definitely grown thick skin because of the blog.

Question 5: What’s one fun fact about you?

Bridget has 2 masters degrees in education. Casey won an Emmy for the TV show she produces in Chicago.

Question 6: What’s your favorite post (and why)?

Bridget: My favorite post is a recent makeover I tackled in our home. I never really loved our builder basic bathroom, but didn’t want to spend a bunch of money doing a renovation. So I decided to swap out a few small things and add shiplap to the space. I now absolutely love it and wish I would have done it sooner.

Casey: My favorite post is our guest bedroom makeover. Bridget & I did every single project in there by ourselves and it’s when we really became comfortable using power tools. We added a wood accent wall, built a floating credenza, and even did the electrical work in the room. It turned out lovely and it’s wonderful having guests over in such a comfortable space.

Question 7: What are your blog goals for the future?

We never thought our blog would become the business that it is today, so we’re grateful for any opportunities that will come our way because of The DIY Playbook. With that being said, we’d love to run the blog full-time someday and have hopes to create a home decor product line, write a book, or even do a TV show. Honestly, we’re open to anything that may come our way!
