Back Entry Small Space Makeover at the Flip House
Psssst… this post *might* contain affiliate links: see my disclosure here.
This little back entry was the perfect small space makeover for the flip house.
Story time: The *first* time I saw this little back entry, I could picture this space. I knew I couldn’t go wild with pattern or color in the rest of the house just because of resale, but something about bringing some fun decorative details into this small space felt safe.
Paint
It’s not as obvious in photos, but the walls in here were in *rough* shape. Chipping and peeling paint. Cracks between the siding. It felt like this was the last part of the original house that hadn’t been removed or covered with new siding. Given the age of the house, I tested for lead and- no surprise- it came out positive. What that meant for me was that I used full dust protection (ask, glasses, gloves, etc.) and only sanded the top non lead layer of paint. Once the wall was smooth, I painted over all the leaf paint with an oil based primer. Lead paint sealed and good to go.
Doors
I wanted to change both sets of doors, but… as is typical with older homes, these are not standard sizes. The interior door was actually in great shape so I painted and swapped out the hardware which made a big difference. The outside screen door wasn’t so great, but I painted it with metal paint and changed the screen door hardware.

Floor
The floor was pretty grubby but the easiest part of this project. There was a wooden step up onto the threshold that had to be removed and then a few other places that needed to be filled and sanded. I’m using my favorite Behr floor paint and picked a fun blue to match the wallpaper I picked out. You’ll also notice that the back porch got painted too; the gray goes much nicer with the blue floor than the peeling red.
Lighting
The original light was… you guess it… a dated boob light. I replaced it with my favorite style: the Moravian star. This looks so much cuter and suits the age of the house too.
Wallpaper
The wallpaper is the star of the show here. I’ve linked it below but the minute I saw it, I knew it was the perfect bold paper for a small space like this. This is adhesive paper which was a little tricky to apply given the texture of the ceiling and the humidty, but once I got it to stick… perfection.
DIY Peg Wall Hook
I wanted to add some hooks for coats and hats and this DIY peg wall hook was surprisingly easy to make. I drilled a shallow hole with a forstner bit into a 1×4 piece of common pine and then glued/ hammered these shaker pegs in place. I didn’t photograph but I *did* share to Instagram so you can see the process here.
This was an easy weekend project and made such a difference. It was a perfect reminder that sometimes tiny little spaces can pack a fun punch.
