Lover of color, wrangler of chaos, thrifter of all the things.

Hi, I'm Charlotte! I'm fixing up our 100 year old house and artfully hoarding armchairs in the garage. I love color. I love flea markets. I love a little mess. My days are spent writing, painting, sanding, laughing and negotiating with our 5 kids. You can read more about us here

Styling shelves scares the crap out me. I mean not Styling shelves scares the crap out me. I mean not the same way electric eels or Freddy Krueger or chiggers do but still... I find it intimidating. Today I called in the big guns and asked my friend, a professional stylist, for help. I’ll share all his advice in a blog post so let me know what questions you have for him in the comments below. I’ve already noticed one or two things I’d tweek in this photo but thankfully I’m the only one looking at this space... my kids would only notice if those shelves were filled with bubble gum and video games. Note: they are not. #atcharlottesnewhouse #achlivingroom #shelfie #shelfdecor #shelfstyling #shelfdecor #shelfdecoration #shelfies #shelfiegoals
You all know I like a good creeper but sometimes I You all know I like a good creeper but sometimes I’m wrong. I met Clinton on here a little more than a year ago when I got a message that said simply “hello dear”. I sent him a Bambi gif, he sent me an emoji... pretty typical in the world of fake creeper accounts. But Clinton was different. He watched my stories. He introduced himself. He wished my kids happy birthday when I posted. Turns out... he’s not a creeper. He’s just a friendly guy from Dubai sliding into my DMs. 😄 Is it possible he pulled the wool over my eyes and is just hoping to get some money one day? Maybe... but I choose to believe we’d enjoy a cup of coffee together if we ever met. Swipe to watch.
This wall isn’t even a little bit how I hope it This wall isn’t even a little bit how I hope it will look eventually. But now that we own a house and I can go ham on design projects I find myself a little more deliberate and thoughtful about everything. Most of my projects each day are small items like hanging these sweet pencil drawings. I patched some drywall and unpacked a box of books onto a small shelf in the basement. Not Instagram worthy but part of the gradual process of *moving in*. Swipe for a vision board of this space. I also patched some drywall, hung a few hooks, flushed the fish that died who knows how long ago and replaced the caps on 3 tubes of toothpaste. Glamorous I tell you. Utterly glamorous. #gallerywall #workinprogress #atcharlottesnewhouse #portraitdrawing #achbedroom
I’ve had plenty of thoughts for you these past f I’ve had plenty of thoughts for you these past few days and I’m so appreciative of the honest and candid conversations you’ve had with me as a result. In the last year we’ve navigated racism, police brutality, science denial and now white supremacy and domestic terrorism. Like it or not, our ability to engage with each other and discuss these topics is the only way to sever the broken ties within our country. And the only way to engage and discuss is to... speak. Personal growth and cultural progress cannot happen without tough conversations and vulnerability and uncovering individual biases. I notice mine every day and fight my instinctive urge to turn a blind eye and move on. For many of us it’s *real* easy not to engage. Status quo. But engagement takes practice. It’s a learned skill. Mistakes will be made. Like any new endeavor there will be discomfort and embarrassment and disappointment. Knowing that I’m working to support and understand the experience of all Americans and not just those who look like me is worth every bit of tension. Human rights and social justice and democracy are why I engage regardless of who might disagree. #achsunday
A big part of counseling is active listening and r A big part of counseling is active listening and rephrasing something back to a client. In fact, it’s rare that a good counselor will step in with actual advice or directions. (‘It sounds like that was really painful for you.’ vs. ‘You should have said ___.’) The same principle is true with parenting. Responding to a child with empathy rather than judgement often yields more powerful results (‘I’m sorry you got up from the table and had to be excused’ vs. ‘Every night I tell you to sit down and once again you got up!’) When huge events like the domestic terrorism in Washington happen, there’s always an undercurrent about folks who stay silent and carry on business as usual. To me, it’s not about making a big public statement or sharing some wisened perspective, it’s more about acknowledgement and empathy. “Wow. It’s horrible what is happening.” “I can’t imagine how scary it must have been for the members of government in that building.” When faced with silence, the natural response is to fill in the blanks and, sadly, those blanks are often ‘this person must not care [about me] because she hasn’t mentioned anything about this.’ Until we acknowledge the world around us, we can do nothing to change it. #achsunday
