Sunday Seven with Cuckoo 4 Design
Psssst… this post *might* contain affiliate links: see my disclosure here.
Happy Sunday, everyone! Today’s Sunday Seven feature might have one of my favorite homes in the blogosphere. My friend Julia has an effortless and chic style that comes across on every inch of her blog Cuckoo 4 Design. Her style is cool and curated with a dollop of whimsy. Clever and creative, it’s hard not to get sucked into post after post on her site. Whether making her own fabric, dissecting a couch (see below), or painting her own gorgeous artwork, Julia has a design Spidey sense. I was thrilled to spend a few hours with Julia recently at the Better Homes and Gardens Stylemaker event and, oh… no biggie… she has a whole spread in the BHG Stylemaker issue. I can’t speak highly enough about Julia’s aesthetic, the risks she takes with her decor and the easy breezy way in which she makes it look to be a successful blogger AND supportive mom.

Question 1: Why did you start blogging?
To share all my DIY antics and creative side with my family in Germany and other likeminded people. I wanted to start much earlier but ended up waiting until my daughter went to school. .
Question 2: What has been your proudest moment as a blogger?
Oh gosh I don’t know. I’m always proud when I accomplish a difficult project. I was never really competitive in sports even though I’m athletic. It just didn’t resonate with me but when it comes to projects and creativity then I’m really competitive and want to accomplish certain tasks. So when I finish something then I’m really proud of it. For example cutting our brand-new sofa in half to get it into the basement and putting it back together was such a moment.

Question 3: What is the hardest thing about blogging?
The hardest thing is all the un-fun stuff you have to do behind the scene. The business side of it and also trying not to compare yourself to other blogs and people. The comparison game can drag you down if you let it.
Question 4: What is one thing you wish you’d known early on with your blog?
That brings me back to question 3. I wish I would have known more of the business side of blogging early on. Hey, I still don’t know enough about it. I just cruise along and learn on the way. I made so many mistakes and fixing them later drives me crazy.
Question 5: What’s one fun fact about you?
I don’t know if this is a fun fact but I’m German which is also a reason why my blog is called Cuckoo4Design which all started with the cuckoo clock my parents bought me as a gag gift when I moved to the US because they knew I disliked them. I don’t dislike them anymore.
Question 6: What’s your favorite post (and why)?
I have so so many favorite posts. This is hard. One of my favorite projects I’ve done this year is finally painting the textured concrete on my porch. I wanted to do that for the longest time. It changed the entire look of our home. We live in a neighborhood where all the homes look the same and now mine finally looks different.
Question 7: What are your blog goals for the future?
I don’t really have any blog goals. I want to have fun, enjoy the ride and share my projects. Anything else is a bonus!
It’s like flipping through a magazine, right? Seeing all of Julia’s rooms makes me want to tie my own house together in like a million ways. I LOVE how her style flows from room to room without being redundant. julia is one of my most favorite people in the world! and she is so talented, kind, and funny- and so humble.
I KNEW she was a rockstar, but then I started stalking her blog and am on my KNEES! Super stah!
Thanks so much for having me. I’m not a rockstar though, just ask my kids LOL
They just don’t know yet! Brad and Angie’s kids don’t think they’re anything special either. 😉 Thanks for participating! I spend FAR too long going through posts on your blog looking for images! 🙂 #stalker
Love reading these posts. I love Julia and her answers really resonate with me. Ironically, I first started reading her blog when I moved to Germany and was in the opposite position she is, trying to keep up with all my people back in the U.S. I even wrote her to ask her German hardware store questions and she was so helpful… HaHa, How do you spell Polyurethane in German 😛 Thanks Julia!
