Gray Relaxing Bedroom with PPG Timeless Paint

Disclosure: I’m partnering with The Home Depot and PPG Timeless paint on this makeover. All opinions are my own!

My friend, Renee, has wanted a little refresh in her bedroom for years! Nothing major… the space is great and her bed and side tables are basically new. But… the room was the same color as when she moved in which was… bleck. Maybe with a different color palette, the ecru taupe beige walls would have worked, but she wanted a more sophisticated calming gray. And that… was NOT playing nice with the yellow-y walls. Which is where PPG’s new Timeless paint comes in! Best part? This paint provides the best coverage is easy to wash and costs less than $40!!!

I picked up a few samples at The Home Depot first. Gray is always a tricky color… it looks different in varying lights and can skew towards either blue or green or tan. So putting samples on the wall in the space is essential.  PPG Timeless is especially well suited for painting with these lighter colors because it is also resistant to stains! I started with four colors. Two felt a little blue, one was a little dark, and the last one, Go To Gray, felt perfect. We wanted something bright with a hint of color. A tip for choosing the right gray… look to the darkest color on the paint chip for a hint as to which color family each gray might fall into. Darkest color blue? Expect that gray to read closer to blue. Darkest color brown? Expect the gray to read closer to brown. You get the idea!

This project was a surgical strike… I didn’t want to put Renee out longer than I needed to so I came in and painted one coat on Saturday evening and then returned the next day to handle any touchups. Note this timeline is tight so I was banking on great coverage after one coat. When using lighter colors, it’s not always easy to get away with one coat, but PPG Timeless is intended to have one-coat coverage!

one coat coverage

I started by rolling the walls with a low nap roller meant to accommodate smoother walls. This paint already provides super smooth coverage, but using the right nap for the surface is always recommended. Then I cut in around the ceiling and baseboards. I find this to be a bit faster but it also makes it easier to avoid any visible brush strokes. Thankfully… the only thing I needed to do the next day was touch up the places I missed because I was essentially painting in the dark the night before! The base color was deceptively dark so only needing one coat was a HUGE relief!

Touch ups always go faster so it didn’t take long to finish the space the next day. No drips. No streaks… perfect coverage. Without changing a single piece of furniture, the space was a million percent brighter and lighter. Paint I tell you… magic maker. And when the paint goes on smoothly and also provides durable wear resistant finish… that’s the holy grail!

I wanted to freshen up the space a bit on a budget just so Renee could see how the room looked styled a little differently. To help accentuate the new smooth gray walls, we needed a little color. Nothing overpowering, just something fresh to break up the gray tone on tone.

Blush pink is the perfect little bit of warmth to compliment the gray. I brought some into the duvet and the throw pillows. To tie in the black accent chair, I layered a smaller throw rug and added a simple modern print in her bay window. I also replaced her smaller crystal lamps with these larger white ones… the white really pops against the newly painted gray walls and I think the larger scale is better for such a large room with high ceilings.

A pink orchid, a potted plant and a cozy throw blanket and the space felt new and improved. Just because of a few updated accessories and a coat of PPG Timeless paint. Not only did it essentially cover the whole space in one coat, but it’s also super durable with great washability and scrubbability. Basically music to my DIY mom ears!!

PPG Timeless has smooth one-coat coverage and is available online or exclusively at your local Home Depot. I will DEFinitely be using this paint again for future projects. I was beyond impressed with how easy it was to use and how well it covered. Anything that will save me multiple coats and is stain resistant is ALWAYS a good thing!
