Blue Patterned Laundry Room

Psssst… this post *might* contain affiliate links: see my disclosure here.

In the fall of 2025, my friend Sam and I were on the most fun show, That Thrifting Show, and our challenge was to create a space that was layered with pattern… In an effort to save time and money I DIYed a wallpaper design and have wanted to recreate it in my own home ever since- the laundry room it is!

A laundry room with blue patterned wallpaper, white washer and dryer, and six vintage-style posters framed on the wall.

The laundry room in our new house is about as bare bones as they come. Washer/ Dryer. Sink. Shelves. There was NOTHING about this space that I loved but it was also perfectly fine and I wasn’t in a position to do a heavy (i.e. spendy) makeover. This might be the lowest budget makeover I’ve done in a while and even though I didn’t change anything major, I’d say the space feels much more inviting. Feast your eyes on how it looked when we moved in.

Let me be clear. I don’t care for a single thing in this space. The floors, the shelves, the light, the washer/ dryer. It’s all *fine* but none of it is amazing. But this is a budget makeover so the floors and the appliances have to stay. Are washer/ dryers considered appliances? First thing I did was to remove the shelving on the left wall. I never used it and don’t have much need for storage in here. All I store is extra detergent, woolite, my steamer and some delicate mesh bags that never get used. The shelf above the the washer/ dryer is plenty. I also removed the plastic paper towel holder and the drying rack since it was falling apart anyways.

The base color is my favorite blue: Behr’s Jet Ski.

And then the ‘wallpaper’ is a slightly darker blue applied in quick haphazard strokes. Two things that helped me: my laser level and this detail brush. I posted the process on Instagram so you can go watch there but it really is as simple as setting your laser line and then moving across making quick slashes with your brush. Shift the laser level down a few inches and repeat. Our amazing producer took a picture of me in action on set which may give you a better sense of the process.

For the rest of the laundry room I made a few upgrades. I built a wooden topper for the metal shelf over the washer/ dryer and painted it to match the wall. I also sewed a skirt and velcro’d it around the utility sink. You also can’t see but I added a new drying rack that folds down flat and is hiding behind that flea market mermaid painting.

The space needed a square rug so after trying a handful of fun patterned ones, I decided this jute one was the best bet… it came with the stripes but I painted over the blue stripe with the wall paint just to tie it in. The artwork is a set of fun old school reproduction prints I brought back with me from Round Top years ago. I grabbed the MOST basic of frames and love this new gallery wall.

It’s impossible to see in photos, but I removed the industrial overhead light and replaced it with a simple farmhouse light and added a couple hooks on the pantry doors into the laundry room to finish out the space.

I didn’t photograph them but I also picked up a few of these collapsable laundry baskets with handles and given the PERPETUAL laundry that is moving through our house, these have been AMAZING. They never get folded up but… they do nest really well and the handles are great. So no… this space NEVER looks like this because there is ALWAYS a handful of laundry baskets or a pile of dirty laundry in here, but… it’s a much prettier space and I’d say the whole thing set me back $300.
